An NFT is more accurately described as an unfungible token. Of course, the immediate follow-up to such a definition would generally be: what is a non-fungible token? Fungibility is an economic concept that refers to the interchangeability of an item. For example, the value of a dollar on the world market can change. But a specific dollar note is exchangeable, or fungible, with any other dollar note. Consider a bill in this case as a token. Entering it into an online registry called the blockchain creates unique properties. A dollar is therefore a fungible token.

I) Introduction to NFT

An NFT is a non-fungible digital token. This means that each NFT is intrinsically unique. Creating digital assets in the metaverse as NFTs to make them unique is a common practice. Anything represented in this way becomes an NFT. So you can create NFTs from music files, jpg images and almost anything else. It is essential to understand precisely what is being sold when using these services.

Metaverse companies and similar entities often use NFT sales as part of their business. Therefore, questions about the role of NFTs in copyright law should always follow when asking what an NFT is. People often mistakenly attribute NFT ownership to copyright ownership. NFTs are intrinsically unique because they are non-fungible tokens.

Even if NFTs share visual elements, they are still intrinsically unique from each other at the blockchain level. An NFT is linked to a DLT, making it proprietary and transferable to others by controlling a private key. Just as you cannot tear a banknote in half for partial use, you cannot split an NFT. It is intrinsically indivisible in functionality. Because NFTs are unique, they can be a scarce resource. This is similar in principle and practice to the scarcity of specific baseball cards.

II) Uses and characteristics :

When you buy an NFT, unless explicitly stated in the terms of sale, you are not buying the intellectual rights to the material it contains. It’s like buying a copy of the Mona Lisa. You own that individual print. But you would not own any other print or the Mona Lisa herself. Moreover, generally, one can safely assume that NFTs could use the presented material to create more NFTs later. As such, it is essential to always examine the copyright terms of an NFT.

NFTs (non-fungible tokens) were introduced in 2014 with the creation of the ERC-721 protocol on the Ethereum blockchain.

Now that you know some of the technical elements of an NFT, you may be wondering what its role is in modern technology. What is an NFT in a more utilitarian sense? The answer to this question generally focuses on the fact that NFTs are unique and inherently provide proof of ownership. But the overriding importance of NFTs is that they provide proof of ownership without the need for physical proof.

For example, imagine a huge statue on the outskirts of your town. You could buy this statue. But you wouldn’t want to move it. An NFT could achieve the instant proof of ownership without requiring it to be moved to your home. NFTs can even provide this proof of ownership of digital items without a physical presence. It’s a new way of proving ownership.

III) Criticism and impact of NFT :

Transactions on the blockchain, which are necessary for the creation and management of NFTs, raise concerns about their environmental impact, mainly due to the carbon footprint associated with these operations. In addition, the fees embedded in transactions, while often negligible for large-scale transactions, can represent an obstacle for smaller transactions, affecting the economic viability of some NFT-related activities. Emblematic examples of NFT, such as the famous CryptoPunks and the virtual world of Decentraland, have demonstrated the considerable impact of this technology. These NFTs have redefined standards in the digital art industry, with works selling for record sums.

Many artists have had their work sold as NFT without prior consent. This breaks both intellectual property and copyright. However, many NFT markets are also working to stop this trend by implementing safeguards in their platforms. This usually takes the form of ‘takedown teams’ that remove NFTs that go against the site’s rules.

Similarly, in the field of games, notably with projects such as Axie Infinity, NFTs have created new business models and innovative gaming experiences, highlighting their transformative potential. The evolution of NFTs intertwines with the Metaverse, raising crucial questions about their use and overall impact. As essential components of the Metaverse, NFTs influence the way people interact, exchange and create in these virtual worlds. However, this convergence is also raising questions about the social, economic and cultural implications, prompting debate about the direction this technology will take and its role in shaping the digital future.

Conclusion

In concluding, we explore the complex world of NFTs, we discover a digital revolution where uniqueness blends with blockchain to redefine ownership in the virtual world. Despite their notable success in art, games and the Metaverse, NFTs are not exempt from debate, raising environmental and economic concerns. Their impact on the way we create, exchange and interact in the digital world continues to raise profound questions. As NFTs make their way through digital history, the future holds fascinating developments and challenges, forcing the world to constantly redefine its relationship with property in the ever-changing landscape of technology.
